My peer review of Minji Kawck’s Blog

For the peer review, I have chosen to discuss Minji Kawck’s third blog in which she reflects on the ’3D Mask Making about politics’ course. The reasons why I have chosen to review her blog are because I have always been interested about this course. 

Her final mask design was approached from South Korea’s COVID-19. I love her idea of the attempt at this circumstance and I think this topic is very compatible with the topic of Social Responsibility. Currently, each country has a variety of news, and it is very interesting to choose Korea among them.

According to the content, she seems to have made a lot of efforts, including planning and making various attempts, to produce better outcome. She seems to have tried to approach the subject in many ways and aspects. And the results seem to have been made in a very attractive way to match her efforts.

At the middle and end of her reflection, she writes that she doesn’t have had enough resources and instruction. In my case, I agree with her very much because I felt that there was a lack of information and practice that the class delivered by the lack of face-to-face classes.

However, I was really fascinated by her work, and I would want to tell her that she should be proud of what she made. 

To conclude, I think while reading someone else’s reflection, I was also able to reflect differently on my own works and the next steps that I can take in future projects. It was great to meet people from other courses and share ideas. I think Minji Kawck’’s reflection was both honest and thoughtful. It’s just so sad that the current situation was poor at creating her work with more information. Nevertheless, she produced fantastic results.

Blog3: Project outcomes and personal development reflection

The Better Lives Unit gave lectures on topics such as diversity, sustainability, culture appropriation, social responsibility. My chosen project during this second and third term is “Fashion Illustration: View from the Catwalk”. In this class, I could discuss about various artists and how to draw using various techniques. I got to know a lot more techniques than I knew, and I got to develop. And I was very happy to be able to express more textures through this unit. For the project, I was asked to research a designer or brand related to the lecture themes and investigate it. So the brand I chose is Tommy Hilfiger. 

There is a reason for choosing this brand. The Tommy Hilfiger brand has features that correspond to the subject of Sustainable and Social Responsibility. Tommy Hilfiger was moved to ease the burden of persons with disabilities and present the design. He successfully created a collection of disability friendly clothing for children in 2016 and is now back in line for clothing for adults. The collection was officially launched in October 2017. In addition to sustainable theme shops with eco-friendly interiors, he also actively participates in the Millennium Promise, a non-profit organization that focuses on eradication extreme poverty, hunger and preventable diseases in poor regions, classifying Hilfiger as the Millennium MDG Global Leader of Promos. 

 So I focused on these two topics when I was drawing illustrations “Sustainability” and “Social Responsibility”. I have tried many things to draw with natural materials or recycled materials, and I have learned and studied more about disability. It was very shocking for me to think deeply and realize that what I am using comfortably without thinking may be inconvenient for someone just now. When I was painting, I received a lot of help from videos posted by Sue Drey. In the video, she showed various techniques and it was very useful. It is such a shame that I can only access these classes online because of Corona. If it were a face-to-face lecture, I am sure I could have gotten more. Nevertheless, it was a very valuable and fantastic lecture.

 In conclusion, the Better Lives Unit was a very desirable lecture for me to think a lot about fashion.

Blog Post 2 – Themes reflection task

Within the Better Lives unit, I got a lot of information of each theme. All of them was so interested and useful. There have been many different and diverse topics talked about which has opened me up to new things such as my passions for subjects elsewhere from my chosen course. I think it can be said three main themes: sustainability, diversity, and social responsibility. Through this reflective task, I was able to discuss about how the Better Lives themes might change how I work in the future.

 I made my choice to join Fashion Illustration: View from the Catwalk unit. Because in this unit, I can study a specified range of collections focusing on designers who explore diversity and sustainability within their work. This project gives information about fashion illustration and how it services the fashion industry. I was able to learn drawing techniques from analogue to digital, narrative, style and attitude within fashion imaging. I am still researching about designers and brands to start my project. I am confusing about “future” means what. Whether it is my project or it is about years later. If it means my future work after few years, this Better Lives unit would have affected my future work a lot. Even now, I am thinking about themes related to my work and my aspect about my work is keep changing. Before I took this lecture, I did my work without considering much. But through this unit, it was an opportunity for me to think about something more deeply and point out the error. And if “future” means my project, I can say the project ‘Fashion Illustration: View from the Catwalk’ gave a lot of motivation of creativity. I was, and I am still learning various way to express and show my intention through my own way. 

I haven’t decided on the theme of my project yet, but I will work on the designers and brands after further investigation. There are still more lectures left, so I expect to learn more from the remaining lectures.

lecture reflection 1

This lecture discussed about the POWER AND fashion, money, media, consumer, protest. One of the most impressive parts to me was about the ‘power and media’. The lecture mentioned the media as the most influential means of advertising today. An example is what happened recently when Instagram, the most advanced of the most influential SNS, became very popular. Online social media such as Instagram have just begun to become active in earnest, but the size is the largest at present. In this media, you can share the fashion items that you wear or enjoy and your life by uploading photos or videos. The posts can be viewed by any Instagram user anywhere in the world and c-an be influenced by them. We can look at this in terms of both the seller and the consumer. From the seller’s perspective, an influential person can achieve global advertising effects by dressing up products and posting postings. From a consumer’s perspective, fashion has become more accessible. Not only has it become more accessible, but it has also turned into a simpler and easier route to purchase. Of course, there are many positive factors, but there is also some negative ones. Advertisers often use this phenomenon to produce advertisements that have a bad effect. Consumers are more exposed to risk because they accept it in ignorance. Most users of Instagram do not upload photos of once-on items. It’s because they have the idea that I have to wear new, trendy clothes every day to show luxury to others. There is a situation where people buy clothes, wear them once and throw them away without wearing them again simply to show people. As a result, many of the clothes consumed in that year are discarded.

 With the development of social networking services, diversity of expression and the lives of many people have become very easy to look into. There has been huge changes for sellers and consumers.

In fact, fashion trends are changing very quickly these days. It makes a difference in a very short period of time and the sellers make it like a rule. Rather, it changed the industry as if a big change had to take place as the seasons changed. And as SNS became active, this situation and the show life became worse. And as SNS became active, this situation and the show life became worse. To show people only, take pictures of expensive products, post postings, and show fake lives. In other words, luxury has increased. The media should support us to live a more meaningful, rich and vibrant life with the characteristics that it has strong radio waves and can handle wider boundaries more easily. Largely influential Influencers and companies should use fashion to better communicate with consumers and change popular consumerism, their wasteful way of thinking.

 I had not thought much about the effects of the media before. However, as I was studying after taking the lecture, I thought I might be a victim of the media.
