Reflecting on Lecture 1: Teleica Kirkland, Represenation

My peer review of Juan Ocampo Echevery`s Blog.

I found a few blogs related to personal experience and cultural background matching with the themes of better lives. So to choose my peers’ review was challenging, until I discovered a blog about Representation from Juan Ocampo Echeverry. While I was reading the first paragraph of the blog, I agreed on a way in which he said that you could leave behind some heritage or roots because on the society you were growing up. It did not feel much of an issue, and as he did not even notice because it always felt normal to him to feel related to his birth nationality than to his parents background.  He had to move to another country to experience feeling unrepresented in such a publicised industry as Fashion, when the reality he explained is still seen on many Latin American societies between their own multicultural communities. I say this because in the 90´s, the mayority of advertisments used to have a Caucasian figure that would only represent 1% of the population in my country. Many people became, as Juan Ocampo described them on the blog as marginalised and undesirable, to the point that they started to feel ashamed from their roots to the point of lying about where they were coming from.  People feeling unrepresenting in thier own country that`s even harder than being somewhere else.

He addresses Diversity from a very personal experience, and I found it very inspiring because it is on those situations you realice the flaw that the society you are living in has.  I liked the way he put in context about the values that LCF shares and the importance they have to move forward as forward as a community that celebrates and integrates every individual, and that is true. Because when someone starts to have those values is when channels like social media have an unprecedent role to speak up for no privileged and unrepresentative individuals.

Fashion Outcome Project

The outcome for my project was always to be informative, to explain an other side not usually seen from a manufacturing place where some big brands hire garment factories to produce thier designs there,  and the use of  important facts like more than 80% of the workers do not have a contract or the workers`shifts more than 8 hours a day to support the research done for a feature. I guess through the time of writing, it came hard to choose which information was relevant to explain the context of the topic since many of the readers may not know anything related to my country (I had quite a number of expiriences with people and the fact when I say where I come from, they don´t know where it`s placed). Writing a feature focus on peru´s fashion scene, helped me to investigate more what independent designers are doing, and it was nice to find that they want to tackle workers exploitation, clothing pollution and inequity through fashion. On the other hand, I had the opportunity to read from my other classmates´ features as part of our project. It was interesting to read different writing style but, mostly it was surprising to see the choices for the subject of the articles in which Covid-19 was a trendy topic amongs the ones I read. I guess I hoped I would read topics related to people´s background, society and city in order to have a wider idea about the inference of fashion through a personal view or experience. In the end, it turned out that writing not about a current topic is valid when the projects have a signicant connection and matter, and for me, that meant a change of thinking with an upgraded perspective.

Themes Reflection

It was not easy to find the theme of my project, but I was sure from the beginning that my feature for Fashion Journalism was going to be based on certain situations I was able to witness on the fashion industry from a manufacturing country, in this case Peru.  As I was writing the story, I realized that the themes from Better Lives: Sustainability, Diversity and Social Responsibility fit somehow with my culture and homeland background but not always in the good aspect.  I´ve always felt that no matter in which industry you work, you can help others. Social Responsibility and Diversity was two of the themes I was drawn to, after I saw the struggle of my country for many years to act on behalf of communities away from the capital which, during the years of terrorism, they were left behind and suffered abuse and indifference. However, I have been able to be part from the new generation who have learned that we are a multicultural society and should feel proud from our roots. Now, I do believe that the lectures about diversity, sustainability and social responsibility and access to relevant experience first hand, definitely, had an impact on the way I want to approach my way of work in my career in the future. The importance that everything matters, people, animals and our natural resources and if this is done in a sustainable and responsible matter everyone wins as a chain of reaction in which it could lead to build a better society where inequity and abuse will not affect people´s life.

Emerging Technologies

When I think about technology, it comes to my mind computers, geeks and Bill Gates. I consider myself a not very tech person and when I had to learn basic computer skills, I was a slow learner. It makes me realize now that my approach to technology was not the best and that is why I always kept a distance from knowing about the latest advances in that field. 

While I was watching the lecture about emerging technologies, it opened my curiosity about endless possibilities that fashion could have not only on a virtual world but if it is implemented in the right way, it can have sustainable impact in the industry as well, it´s more about than just Internet, social media and some design programs. 

Emerging technology has always been a good initiative for a small brand to be noticed and different. But now, I don’t think about it just like a good initiative or something to be differentiated, I see it like a shift that has to be made in the fashion industry. It´s still good to know that certain craftsmanship is needed in fashion, but this can be enhanced with emerging technology like AI, VR and others. Now, the social distancing is a measure that has been placed in many cities, emerging technology is providing a new sphere where people from the industry can still create and be out there. 

The explanation of Technological Singularity that a program can tell you if that item fits good or not on someone´s body, is the beginning of what can be done to find quick solution at the time of buying a garment. It would be really interesting to see how large fashion brands implement emerging technology at wide range for consumers and become more sustainable with innovative practices. I see the future of emerging technology not only be implemented on the fashion creative process, communication channels, and supply chain and for consumers. It would be great to use it to manage the waste problem cause by fashion or to track a garment through the code bars and know who made it to tackle worker exploitation.

By the time I´m writing this blog, we´re already on lockdown due to Covid-19, and it´s in this situation that I find that emerging technology has always been there somehow but we didn’t want to fully embrace it because of unfamiliarity with these advances.  The whole fashion system has gotten used to work on a certain conservative and old way, but it had to happen something that disrupt our habits that make us look something usually overlook or not implemented as a necessity to be part of us. Maybe, we really need this virtual world to make our creations possible, to make a change in the fashion system and to create more sustainable practices towards our planet.
