Lecture reflection 1
Reflection on the relationship between with fashion and nature by Yizhuo Li.
After the lectures’ learning of these few days, they have changed my thinking a lot. These lectures helped me rethink about the relationship between fashion and nature, and what is sustainability for fashion. These questions came from Nature lecture of Kate Fletcher, I totally agreed with Kate Fletcher’s concept which talks about in nature as a human living environment, the reciprocal relationship between people and how did human choices we wear and environmental quality.
Some people believe that beauty and fashion are beyond everything in the world, I was a believer in this point of view. However when some news and reports talk about humans kill animals for fur coats or other fashion products, and people build more and more factories for fashion industries are increasing. I changed my mind gradually and started to consider environments’ problems that exist in our society. Because it is no doubt that human is the murderer will jeopardize nature. Until I attendances Kate Fletcher’s lecture, she gave me some answers to my question and she proved the importance of protecting the nature.
In my opinion, I don’t think that without nature, the civilization of society and humanity will not develop to the present. And nature is above life, including humans, animals, and plants. Human is part of nature, we are not the creator of nature. If human beings continue to use natural resources endlessly and do not make up for losses on time, then breaking through natural boundaries (Safe operating space for humanity.) will lead to ecological imbalances, and the final result is that human beings will perish and fashion will become meaningless.
On the other hand, after Kate Fletcher’s lecture, I think depth about the relationship between fashion and nature. Nature is an enabler of fashion because nothing happened without nature. Besides, nature is a limiting factor for fashion, therefore, the human can not developing fashion industry faster than nature development.
“Does fashion action will impact nature?” this question is Kate Fletcher left for us, and I agreed with it. Indeed, fashion action will affect the natural environment. The source and consumption of all substances in the biosphere is to maintain a delicate balance by using metabolism, so the biosphere is not a repository for waste produced by humans. I think the fashion industry can’t deny the destruction of nature, such as the use of chemical dyes to make colored fabrics and threads, and the wastewater generated during the production process will be discharged into the river, which will cause water pollution. I suggest that the fashion industry should reduce the use of fibre products because all the fibre impacts the natural system. Then people can choose renewable resources in the ecosystem, including wool and silk. Or recycle or using organic materials to achieve sustainable development in the biosphere.

After reading Li yizhuo’s post about “thinking about the Relationship between Fashion and Nature”, I reached a consensus with some of her arguments, which are all from Nature lecture with kate Fletcher. I totally agree with her that “Nature is the facilitator of fashion, because nothing happens without nature.” This has to make us think about the environmental problems in society. People use resources provided by nature to find inspiration and carry out Creation, if there is no natural resources, the design and development will stop. However, in order to meet the personal needs and consumer needs of human beings, mass-produced design products, some products that are not needed become garbage, such as some chain clothing brands, zara HM , They can produce 300 pieces of clothing per second, and different sizes are also mass-produced. While gaining wealth, they also create a lot of waste (fabric treatment wastewater; after-production but not purchased clothing …), when producing clothing The resulting fibers and wastewater are eventually discharged directly into rivers and oceans. Even if they are treated, they will eventually pollute natural resources. The waste of textile products is also a big problem. A large proportion of textile products are eventually sent to landfill Buried in the factory will eventually increase pollution and affect the ecosystem
A large number of brands are now promoting the concept of sustainable development, such as Stella McCartney. Since the birth of the brand, Stella McCartney’s brand philosophy is to firmly use animal fur, has been committed to scientific innovation and environmental protection of raw material cultivation, for As far as luxury goods are concerned, maintaining the existing brand image should be above all else. In recent years, many luxury brands have joined the furless environmental protection army, and Prada is one of them.
In the “What We Carry” short film taken by Prada and “National Geographic”, we were also pleasantly surprised to find that one of the raw materials used to make ECONYL®-the remaining scraps of clothing production, from Kanazawa garments in Ganzhou, Jiangxi. Nowadays, many designs begin to adopt the eco-friendly concept of recycling and reuse of waste materials to achieve a harmonious relationship between design and nature. Green design is based on the concept of environmental protection, with the goal of saving energy and reducing environmental pollution, using environmentally friendly green materials Product design creates a clean and healthy living environment for people. With the development of society, people’s awareness of environmental protection is getting stronger and stronger. Environmental protection and low carbon are the future development trend of clothing design. The application of environmentally friendly materials to clothing design is the concept of fashion design. The use of environmentally friendly materials to show the texture and style of clothing fabrics has become a matter of great concern to clothing designers. Without buying and selling, there is no harm. Before criticizing the apparel industry or any other industry, we should reflect on our own shopping and lifestyle habits. Whether every item we buy can be used to the best of our ability.

When I browsed around peers’ blogs, I discover that Yizhuo Li has her own unique views on the Better lives unit, and for which she mentioned the development direction of the combination of social responsibility and diversity makes me ponder deeply.
I was attracted by Yizhuo’s point of view about the relationship between fashion and the environment. In the reflecting blog, Yizhuo pointed out social and human civilization will not develop to the present without nature, and fashion will become meaningless if human beings continue to use natural resources endlessly that resulting in ecological imbalance. I totally agree with her perspective of reference, because when fashion develops to a particular stage, it needs social responsibility and humanistic care, reflected explicitly in considering the environment and improving sustainability. For instance, as Yizhuo suggests that for those who work in the fashion industry should reduce the use of fiber products cause all fibers to affect natural systems, also they can choose renewable resources in the ecosystem including wool and silk.
In addition, Yizhuo mentioned about diversity during the process of her work development. Admittedly, there are some marginalized groups such as the blind, deaf, face, and sensory disabled people in our society who can barely enjoy fashion or performance like normal people. Therefore, I think designers or any fashion influencer have the responsibility to add some factors in their productions to raise the public’s awareness that disabilities should be taken more care of. I really appreciate that Yizhuo thinks about using smart textiles [such as silica gel] combined into a sensor mask that can cover the user’s bone area to give the disabled a new perspective of appreciation and a more exciting way of appreciation besides hearing. I believe that her outstanding mask artwork will welcome more different groups to get involved in fashion and performance and make the whole industry become more tolerant.
For the last blog, Yizhuo gives the word ‘sustainability’ another explanation. He shows a lot of examples to discuss the relationship between the fashion mistake and color theory and eventually developed her make up work and style based on this inspiration, which makes me perceive more different knowledge about sustainable fashion.
To sum up, Yizhuo’s three blogs fully explain the theme of better lives: sustainability, diversity, and social responsibility; it also reflects her attentive thinking in learning.
