Themes Reflection Task (2)
The Better Lives Unit has provoked my daily thoughts to exercise my understanding of the fashion industry, sustainability and life on earth. The Fashion Industry should be directing it’s work toward respecting the environment whilst evoking the globe with great fashion.
The problem we are facing now is the earth’s impossibility of synthesising the sizeable amount of waste that humans have been producing over the past 40 years and lifetimes before that.
Solutions to diminish that waste can have unbelievable benefits for our future well-being.
I believe that as Fashion Students it is important to embed the reality of the Fashion World’s current situation; To encourage the choice of making use of biodegradable and sustainable materials in future design work, to encourage the use of waste free, non-biodegradable or eco- friendly Make-up and Hair Products. As in industry we can make these changes holistically.
Diversity is also something that I always try to incorporate within my work. The Better Lives Unit has made me realise this can go much further than simply visual representation; it should also include the teams and brands I work with. This is essential as a Fashion Stylist can have a great impact on what consumers decide to purchase. In some ways, they are showing people what they think they should wear, and minority groups do not always get the support they deserve. Working in a diverse team also means you have a better-quality variety of opinions and ideas that can help the outcome of the work to be beyond diverse and inclusive.
Concerning these themes being reflected within my profession, as a Fashion Stylist and Producer I am aware that I can research into forming a shoot that works sustainably where possible. Sourcing clothing from PR’s and Designers who make use of eco-friendly material, concept Stores and international brands that make the fashion industry’s pollution a statement through clothing, devising together a creative team that makes use of eco-correct products and technics – the list goes on.
It will be my duty to minimize waste product from Set Design and any other areas possible. I am aware this isn’t supposed to be easy as so will experiment with different ways of approaching a project without wasting of abusing the way in which a shoot is carried out.
The repossession of our planet will depend on how society progresses to adapt to our planet’s needs, and I am a part of society. I believe that all of the measures for conservation and preservation of our environment should be pushed much further than it is today and should be given overjoyed support by our governments worldwide. There should be Zero-Tolerance for any discrepancies, and I can only see the rest of society complying with such verdict.
When we will do better for our planet, we will have better lives.

I came across Kalisah’s second blog post (https://1920betterlivessmc.myblog.arts.ac.uk/2020/04/27/themes-reflection-task-2-2/) when looking for a blog post to review.
I really enjoy this post. The second sentence really stuck with me and I agree with it fully, ‘The Fashion Industry should be directing it’s work toward respecting the environment whilst evoking the globe with great fashion.’ The focus on sustainability whilst creating exciting fashion is really what the industry should be focused on doing, sustainability should be a theme that is fully integrated into fashion within the coming years. In her writing, it is clear how the issues of sustainability and fashion have shaped ideas on how she will adopt sustainability into her practice and why it should be adopted into others practice.
Diversity is another theme explored in Kalisah’s blog post. Her reflections in this section make a lot of sense in terms of diversity within fashion. Having diverse creative teams allows for a more diverse production – with ideas coming from different backgrounds and experiences to develop a more inclusive project.
The reflections about how the Better Lives themes might change how she works in the future are inspiring – minimizing waste from set design and sourcing clothing from PR’s and designers using eco-friendly material and brands that make the fashion industry’s pollution a statement through clothing. I had not thought about set design waste minimisation in my own practice, this is something I am going to try and make sustainable in my own work.
I really enjoy the focus on the wellbeing and care talking of the planet in Kalisah’s blog post. It is something that needs attention from everyone, especially the fashion industry (fast fashion). Her point about a zero-tolerance policy for sustainable discrepancies is inspired and may be the only way forward.
My only criticism of this blog post is a more indepth of the social responsibility theme, as the other themes were covered in more detail. However, I feel that many aspects of this theme have been explored in her post, more on the lines of sustainability and diversity – which are both social responsibility themes in themselves.

For my fourth blog post I will be reviewing Kalisah Mohamed’s reflection task (blog post 2).At first when choosing a blog post to review I wanted to pick a post written by an individual who studies the same course as me and aims to work in the same practice purely because I was intrigued to find out if we shared the same thoughts on the lecture themes and wanted to compare how we intended to involve these themes within our own practice in the future. This is when I stumbled across Kalisah’s blog post who is also a fellow stylist. Kalisah’s blog post in particular caught my eye as I really liked the way she expressed her experience within the Better Lives unit and it is clear that the themes have influenced her professional practises for the future being the next generation of fashion stylists.
In Kailash’s second blog post, she begins with reflecting on sustainability and elaborates on the substantial amount of waste us humans have inflicted on to the earth and the repercussions of that. She begins by stating her beliefs on the fashion industry explaining that ‘The Fashion Industry should be directing it’s work toward respecting the environment whilst evoking the globe with great fashion.’ We spoke about similar ideas in the fashion & sustainability Lecture with Nina Stevenson and it is clear that Kalisah has reflected on the ideas we were taught in this lecture. Kalisah also makes a very good point on explaining how us as the next generation of designers, stylist, makeup artists etc can do in order to be more environmentally aware within our own practice by ‘making use of biodegradable and sustainable materials in future design work, to encourage the use of waste free, non-biodegradable or eco- friendly Make-up and Hair Products’ it is clear that themes related around sustainability have not only been thought provoking for her but have evoked thought on how to make her own practice more sustainable within the future.
Kalisah also reflects on the lecture about ‘Diversity’ by Shahidah Bari, she explains that she’s learnt diversity goes ‘much further than simply visual representation; it should also include the teams and brands I work with.’ Im intrigued by the ideas Kalisah has taken away form this lecture and also the fact that it has made her look deeper into her own practice in working with a more diverse team which would give her the opportunity to ‘have a better-quality variety of opinions and ideas that can help the outcome of the work to be beyond diverse and inclusive’ Kalisah’s thoughts have inspired me to really work with a broad team of diverse people as it’s something I don’t get to do often but I believe would be very helpful for future projects.
Overall, I believe Kalisah has most definitely reflected on the themes she has learn about during the lectures and elaborated on how she would use them in her future work. Although Kalisah did mention our own personal responsibility in terms of environmental awareness, I don’t believe she covered social responsibility in fashion, despite this I am thoroughly intrigued about her thoughts on it and how she would possibly incorporate it within her own work. It was really insightful to read about how a fellow fashion stylist would incorporate such themes into their own work, I definitely believe we share similar thought’s and ideas, additionally Kailash has inspired with new ideas for my own practice.
