Lecture: Power

I started the new unit called Better Lives. I listened to the Power lecture one of the lectures in better lives. This lecture was about the relationship between the fashion industry and power. This led me to rethink the power of fashion I thought.
This lecture said the power of fashion is bigger than we thought. Fashion is affecting our lives more than we think. Even though fashion is affecting to the laborer as well as. The company has money by enslaving others. Laborer’s earnings, however, fall below 20 percent of employers’ profits. Besides, some of them can’t make enough money to buy even their daily necessities. Getting fair pay should be human rights. As the level of fashion consumption continues to grow, factories around the world are making sure to supply an increasing number of clothes faster at lower wages. In this process, many workers are exploited and many are injured. This is a grim reality in which other people’s human rights are used to satisfy our personal needs. In terms of consumption, the consumer has so strong power in the fashion industry. This power can be a positive effect on others if it has the right information and uses them properly. Consumer needs to know who makes the product. Because it’s something we’ll wear and use. Otherwise, we are like contributing to the exploitation of the labor force. The content of a lecture like this was a little different from what I thought. I just have been thinking only about designers and sellers. And of course, I have thought that workers will be paid just as much as we pay to live up to minimum wage. In addition, I knew that human rights would be guaranteed. There was no way of knowing whether the workers were being physically harmed. No matter how cheap the wages were, I knew they would keep the minimum wage that was designated by the state. It was inconceivable that I was subtracting other people’s happiness for my needs. No matter how consumers are called kings, I thought it was the workers and the employers who hired them that could claim the rights to the workers. Therefore, I just knew consumers were only people who buy something and were not able to see if they were contributing to the exploitation of the labor force.
According to this lecture, I learned a few things about the relationship between fashion and power. Firstly, I knew the power of the fashion industry was distributed evenly, but I realized that workers had no power compared to the others. Secondly, Consumer power can be happy for someone if used well. And then this power can prevent the exploitation of the workforce to some extent. Thirdly, consumers, employers, laborers and others and everyone has to live contentedly in their positions in the fashion industry. But most important of all, it is that wages for workers should be guaranteed, that we should respect human rights, and that we should all respect and think about each other’s rights.
